Il est aujourd’hui de bon ton, jusque dans certains milieux universitaires, d’expliquer que François Mitterrand a tout fait pour reculer l’échéance de la réunification allemande. Son goût prononcé pour l’Histoire l’aurait enfermé dans une vision passéiste du monde. Sa réflexion, bornée par les accords de Yalta, lui aurait interdit toute vision prospective sur le destin allemand. Avec rigueur et précision, puisant aux meilleures sources, l’historien allemand Tilo Schabert balaie cette légende malveillante. Il démontre au contraire que loin de se contenter d’accompagner le cours de l’histoire, le Président français l’a anticipé, dirigé ou ralenti au fil des nécessités politiques et économiques.
Dès le début de son premier septennat, dans les entretiens qu’il a successivement avec les chanceliers allemands Schmidt et Kohl, il n’oubliait jamais d’évoquer l’éventualité d’une réunification allemande.
